Technical Assistance
Our goal is to enable internet access to the homes of underserved students using whatever technology the area dictates. With Arizona’s diverse geography, there is not a “one-size-fits-all” solution to providing internet to Arizona homes; however, the goal remains the same.
Available Technology
The following various technologies are available:
CBRS
Citizens Broadband Radio Spectrum is 150 MHZ of spectrum using the 3.5 GHZ band with a usable range of 14 miles, depending on terrain.
LEO Satellite
There are two basic types of satellite connections—Geo-synchronous and Low Earth Orbit (LEO). LEO satellites are not new, but there is a resurgence by several companies because they offer an advantage over geo-synchronous satellites by eliminating the 300 milli-second delay. LEO satellites include the following:
- Tesla with their “Starlink” constellation
- Amazon with their “Kuiper” constellation
- Telesat is in the planning phase
- Leosat is in the planning phase
EBS
Educational Broadband Service (EBS) is 114 MHZ of spectrum using the 2.4–2.5 GHZ band with a usable range of 14 miles, depending upon terrain features.
Cellular 5G
Standards are being created now.
